Miss Manners Wedding Etiquette

Emily Post was the first Miss Manners, however now there are several etiquette experts who promulgate “Miss Manners wedding etiquette” and many of the “rules” have been relaxed.

Brides no longer have to restrict their wedding dress color choices to white, cream or light beige. Depending on the season and location, brides are free to choose any color that strikes their fancy. For instance if there will be a beach wedding, a turquoise or aquamarine dress would be a perfect choice.

Shoes no longer need to be closed toe pumps. Miss Manners says that open toed an or ankle strap shoes are perfectly acceptable and don’t have to be white. Choose a color that you love and that goes well with your dress. The most important thing is that your shoes are comfortable and stylish.

Miss Manners says that brides can announce their engagement in the newspaper, at an engagement party and word of mouth or printed announcements.

Who gets invited is technically the privilege of the host, however since it is the bride and groom’s day their wishes should be considered, especially if there is anyone they absolutely do not want at their wedding or someone they feel must be invited.

Miss Manners and anyone else who tackles the ever changing etiquette rules say absolutely “NO!” to asking for cash gifts even if the cash is targeted for charity.

However Miss Manners does allow for a wedding registry card to be included with the invitation, but not printed on the invitation itself.

If this will be a second wedding for either the bride, groom or both each person should talk to their children alone and then together and finally both the man and women should talk to all of the kids together. Then each partner should tell their parents and finally the ex-spouse. Miss Manners wedding etiquette is available on line and in books
