Traditional Wedding Invitation Etiquette

Learn About Traditional Wedding Invitation Etiquette

Weddings today are so varied that it is often difficult to word invitations in accordance with the norms of traditional wedding etiquette. The first thing you need to know, when choosing wedding invitations is who is hosting the wedding.

The first person or persons listed on the invitations is the one who is footing the bill for the wedding. Traditionally, this is the responsibility of the bride’s parents.

Example of a traditional wedding invitation etiquette:

Mr. and Mrs. Bryan Carver
request the honor of your presence
at the marriage of their daughter
Alice Jean
To
William Charles Malloy
Venue, time, date
Street,
city ,state

However, families today are not all traditional, with Mom Dad and the kids. There are divorced, divorced and remarried, single or widowed parents, children hosting a wedding for a widowed or divorced parent, and grandparents raising their grandkids.

All of this could muddy the waters when trying to choose or write the perfect unique verse for your cheap wedding invitations. One place to find sample wording is 4N-wedding-invite.com.

This site allows you to choose a free printable wedding invitation template and has a number of samples of creative wording that you may use as is, or can adapt to suit your needs. We also talk about the both: traditional wedding invitation etiquette and modern wedding invitation etiquette.

If the bride’s parents are divorced, the host is normally the parent that raised her

Mrs. Joanne Smith
requests the pleasure of your company
at the marriage of her daughter
Cynthia Ann Smith
to
John David Henderson

When both of the divorced parents are hosting the wedding, the invitation would be similar to this:

Mr. Robert Miller
And
Mrs. Susan Miller
request the honor of your company
at the marriage of their daughter
Carmen Ann
To
Peter John Howard

As you can see, each family situation requires a somewhat different wording to satisfy the norms of traditional wedding invitation etiquette rules.

If you use the 2N site, you can play with the wording and come up with a verse that will satisfy everyone, be unique, and, allow you to save money by helping you to create unique discount wedding invitations that everyone will love.

The site has lovely wedding invitation design and ideas that you can use at absolutely no charge except for the wedding invitation kit, you will print your invitations on. These invitations are suitable for most weddings, except for a very formal affair.

Traditional wedding invitation etiquette calls for a number of guidelines concerning the way a wedding invitation is laid out and how it is written. There are also a few conventional spelling and wording guidelines that should be used for all parts of the invitation.

1) Punctuation is only used after courtesy titles such as Dr. Mrs. and Rev.

2) Proper names are capitalized.

3) Numbers in a date are spelled out and follow the day eg: Friday the fifth of January.

4) You do not need to include the year, but if you do, it should be spelled out, Two thousand and six, not 2006

5) Spell out the time, half past two in the afternoon, not 2:30PM

6) Traditional wedding etiquette says that the invitation be written in the 3rd person: Mr. And Mrs. John Doe , not we request …

You have a little more leeway in the way the invitation is extended. You can word it in a number of ways: a) ….request the honor of your company, … request the honor of your presence or,… would like you to join us .In this area you pretty much have free reign.

Who should we address the RSVP cards to? This is usually addressed to the wedding host. Today the traditional wedding invitation etiquette rules are very often adapted in a more relaxed form.
