Many etiquette books are emphatic about what you shouldn’t wear to a wedding but lack useful information on what you can appropriately wear.
Wedding attire etiquette depends on the level of formality, the time of day and the wishes of the bride and groom.
Often the invitation will state “black tie” or informal attire. First lets look at the way folks should dress for day time and evening weddings.
Female guests at a daytime wedding may choose:
• A pastel suit such as sage green or blue
• A cute floral dress with a coordinating hat
• A skirt with a sweater set or silky blouse
Male attire for a daytime wedding can be:
• A linen suit in tan or beige and a matching tie for a summer wedding
• Wool suit in navy, charcoal or black for winter
• A dark or neutral suit with a turtleneck
• Dark dress pants with a matching sweater and tie under a blazer.
Remember that an evening wedding calls for formal attire unless the invitation says informal or casual. Tuxedos are appropriate for men after 6pm. Women should wear an evening gown if the invitation says “black tie”. Otherwise a cocktail dress is appropriate.
There is a growing trend towards destination weddings, especially at tropical locations and generally the dress is casual.
Theme weddings are also very popular. These weddings guests are free to dress for the theme. So for a western wedding jeans and boots would be perfect. Women could wear denim skirts and plaid shirts with boots.
Beach weddings and ski resort weddings are also popular. If you are invited to a them wedding dress accordingly unless the invitation states differently.
As you can see, how you dress for a wedding depends on the time of day, destination and theme. So wedding attire etiquette depends on a number of factors.
