Wedding Band Etiquette

Like any other aspect of a wedding there are some basic rules of wedding band etiquette that help to make the wedding itself go a little smoother.

The first and in a way the most important bit of etiquette is under no circumstances should a man give a wedding band to his bride, that he bought for another woman, even if she doesn’t know that. Someone who knows the groom and the fiance may accidentally “spill the beans”.

Traditionally the man purchases the engagement ring and the amount he spends is his choice. If he wants to surprise his girl friend he should try to ascertain her ring size. She isn’t going to like being without her engagement ring even for only a couple of days.

Many couples choose to shop together for their rings and usually select the groom’s ring to match or at least complement the bride’s ring.

While diamonds are the most popular stone for an engagement ring, if the bride to be has another favorite stone the choice is for the couple to make. Be aware that in some cultures pearls are considered bad luck for an engagement or wedding ring.

When shopping for the wedding band it is vital to consider the style and metal of the engagement ring, since most women wear both on the left ring finger. Also one more tradition is that the couple purchase each other’s wedding band.

We should mention that if the woman breaks the engagement, she should return the ring, but if the man decides to call off the wedding she can keep the ring.

Before the wedding ceremony the bride should move the engagement ring to her right ring finger and then after the ceremony she returns it to her left hand. The wedding band should always be closest to the heart according to wedding band etiquette.
