Guidelines for Wedding Invitation Assembly Etiquette

Wedding Invitation Assembly Etiquette

Who would have thought there were rules of etiquette governing how your wedding invitation mailing is assembled?

If the truth be told, I would have put the invitation itself on top of the pile of RSVP reception card, maps, etc. One would think the invitation should be the first thing you see. However, that violates wedding invitation assembly etiquette.

Depending on how many invitations you will be sending out, we suggest you start assembling the invitations about two weeks before you need to send them out, typically about six weeks before the wedding.

Ask a friend or relative with help in assembling the invitation package. You may want to get a couple of water bottles designed for sealing envelopes. You can get them at office supply stores and some department stores.

You may need to fold the invitations and some enclosures. Fold and stack everything in the order they will be placed in the envelope from the invitation to maps. The invitation goes in first with the tissue over the printing (originally done to let the ink dry).

Place the reception card on the tissue. Next put the response card in the flap of the self addressed, stamped envelope and place that on top of the reception card. Finally put any remaining enclosures such as directions and maps.

Remember when you are addressing your invitation envelopes there are etiquette guidelines you should follow. All street names should be spelled out, such as Avenue not Ave. and Boulevard not Blvd. The only exceptions are Mount and Saint which can be written Mt. and St.

Cities and states should also be written out. For instance, Brooklyn, New York not B’klyn, N.Y. Of course if you automatically abbreviate a street name or state, the etiquette police are not going to be at your door, so send it anyway. Wedding invitation assembly etiquette is a guideline, not a law.
